"The Professor And Mary Ann," Darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This will come as no surprise to readers of this blog. Back when "Gilligan's Island" was in its original run, and I, of course, would sing the theme song, the one I most wanted to be...you guessed it... was Tina Louise, as Ginger!!!!!!! Why? Because....you guessed it...she was "the mooooooooovie star!"
Years later, not being a straight man, I learned that straight men/boys always had the hots for Dawn Wells, as Mary Ann! I could understand why, but I still wanted to be Ginger!!!!! I also always thought, even back then, that the Professor and Mary Ann were an item, because their names were always sung together!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, as of yesterday, Ginger and Mary Ann are now the only two surviving cast members of "Gilligan's Island!" Russell Johnson, who played the Professor, passed away yesterday, at the age of 89. His death was due to natural causes--I mean, 89 is a decent number!!!--and he is survived by a wife, daughter, stepson, and grandson.
But, outside of the Professor, just who was Russell Johnson? He was a B movie actor, who made it big thorough this role, but also appeared in two of Universal's most celebrated Sci-Fi classics of the 1950's--"It Came From Outer Space" (1953), and "This Island Earth" (1955). Which became better known, even respected, as the years went on.
Another TV icon of the Baby Boomer generation gone! Remember to watch an episode, or sing a chorus from the theme, in honor of Russell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Professor will be missed by all! Including Mary Ann!!!!!!!!!!!!!
