"And Now, It's 'Sock It To Me' TIme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I am probably one of the few people who remember the Sixties sitcom, "Love On A Rooftop." I knew Judy Carne was in it, but I never saw it, because it was on too late--10PM on ABC. The concept was kind of a "Barefoot In The Park," set in San Francisco, with a young married couple beginning life in a rooftop apartment.
There was something romantic about the title, "Love On A Rooftop," that I just loved. I certainly would have loved a rooftop apartment!
Had Judy Carne done only this, I would be the only one who remembered her.
But, back in the winter of 1968, when I was in seventh grade, and "Rowan And Martin's Laugh-In" made its debut, Judy Carne achieved TV immortality as the "Sock-It-To-Me" girl.
Her fate was sealed, until her death, from pneumonia, on September 3, this year, at the age of 76!
There wasn't much she had to do. Still her twenties, looking chic and sexy, she would dance in a bikini, or some scantily clad item of clothing, until her big moment when she would reveal that it was "Sock-It-To-Me" time, and the world waited to see what would happen--a pie in the face, water doused at her, how would Judy get it socked to her? The premise now seems ridiculous and insulting, but, believe me, forty seven years ago, it caught on enough to make this a catch phrase for the time.
So many of the performers on this program went on to stellar careers, even Oscars. Judy was not one of them. This single act defined her for the rest of her days, even though she occasionally did other things, and wrote a wrenching memoir about her early days in the business, and her tumultuous marriage to Burt Reynolds.
But she was never able to overcome the aura of 'Laugh-In.' Making her both famous, but sad and tragic.
So, Rest In Peace, Judy Carne! You earned it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
