What A Stimulating Read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book has been recommended to me so many times, over the years, that, when Yanagihara's current work, "A Little Life," began garnering literary attention, and I realized she had written this, I thought it was high time I took it on.
Not since "The Signature Of All Things," by Elizabeth Gilbert has a novel blended science and narrative so well that the science sections absorbed me as much as the narrative.
In flashback memoir form, she tells of a noted scientist, Dr.Abraham Norton Perina, and his rise and fall from the scientific community, from noteworthy explorer to child molester. It sounds incredulous in the beginning, but as the novel develops, and understanding sets in, one sees how the goodness of Norton, as he is often referred, eventually destroyed him. And the perpetrator of that destruction--or are there more--makes this a betrayal on the tragic level of "King Lear."
Dense, but stimulating, this novel is a must for those seeking something challenging and enjoyable. My only regret is waiting so long to read this masterful work. The joy is in finally discovering it.
Now, find out for yourselves, dolls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
