That is right, dears. Mitchell Lichtenstein's (son of painter Roy Lichtenstein) 2007 campy and sick cult classic, "Teeth," is being turned into a musical. It will be seen from February 21, 2024-March 31, 2024, at the Main Stage of Playwrights Horizons on 42nd Street, in the heart of Theater Row.
The Book is by Anna K. Jacobs and Michael R Jackson. The Music is by Anna K. Jacobs, and the Lyrics are by Michael R. Jackson. The choreography is by Raja Feather Kelly, and it is directed by Sarah Benson
Then only name I recognize is Michael R. Jackson, who wrote the Tony Award-winning "A Strange Loop," which not even winning the award could keep it floating for long.
But the reason to see this show is to see how the material is handled.
"Teeth" is the story of Dawn O'Keefe, a young woman afflicted with something called vagina dentata. Straight men fear this is true, which is why it is one of the campiest myths out there. For those unfamiliar, the afflicted has teeth around her vagina.
Now, on film, with camerawork and such, so much could be suggested. The final shot is a classic. But how can this story be enacted on stage tastefully? And with musical numbers?
How can I not see this, dears? Don't you want to all hear about it, from me?
And how will they cast it? Who will play it?
Take me back to the days of Children's Theater!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
