Before writing this post, I discovered that this 1958 film was last shown in 2023, and then several years before that. Now, darlings, "Svengoolie" is showing it again, tonight at 8PM.
If you haven't seen it, watch it. Elizabeth Allan, so memorable as Clara Copperfield in Selznick's 1935 film of "David Copperfield," gives her final film performance here, and goes out memorably, there is a famous shot of a prostitute leaning out her window in the opening scenes, and Karloff gives a pretty nuanced performance, far removed from the Frankenstein monster.
But a third time? If it was a gem, yes. But though above the usual crap, this is not a gem. Why doesn't "Svengoolie" show something campy and fun, like "She Demons????????" Now, those girls knew how to do makeup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We will probably watch something else tonight, and, of course, I will let you know what it is, once viewed.
Three times may be the charm, but not here, girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

more like, three strikes you’re Out!!!
ReplyDeleteVictoria, Absolutely! And the opening sequence, depicting a public execution is very upsetting.
