Guess It's Time To Talk About Those TONY Awards!!!!!!!!
Darlings, what in the world are the producers thinking??????
Either this year the TONYS are going to be the greatest, or the worst. First of all, they are taking a sharp decline by being aired live from the Beacon Theatre, rather than the usual Radio City Music Hall. Now, as I understand it, the Hall was not available at this time this year, so this was the alternative. The Beacon is a large venue, though not as large as Radio City. It does all right for concerts and the Ring Cycle, but I am not sure about the TONYS. Especially when I hear what they have planned.
This could be the TONYS that are as long as the Oscars. In addition to featuring numbers from the nominated musicals ("Catch Me If You Can," "The Scottsboro Boys," "Sister Act," and "The Book Of Mormon") they are also planning to showcase the two Musical Revival nods ("How To Succeed..." and "Anything Goes") plus a showstopper from 'Priscilla.' Are they kidding?
In addition--to make matters worse--we are promised a musical presentation from "Spider Man--Turn Off The Dark." Why???? This program is supposed to exemplify Broadway at its best, not tear it down. Or maybe everything is going to be on film, which would be so tacky. In any case, with limited time allotted to each show, how can they deliver on this quantity??????
You can bet the Raving Queen will tune in on Sunday, June 12, even if it is a sure thing that "The Book Of Mormon" (which I was not too keen on) is going to win.
After all the drama attendant this season over 'Spidey,' I thought we were done with this show, for good! Surely not at the TONYS!!!!!! But I can tell you this--anything short of a spectacular aerial display will fall flat on both the live and living room audience. And if it is done LIVE, the possibilities for an accident are (no pun intended) sky high!!!!!!!
So in many ways this could be an interesting TONY awards. Seems like everyone, from Miss Taymor on down, has elected to bite off more than they can chew!!!!!!
Hope they don't end up like cows, swallowing their own cud!!!!!!!!!!!
