Damn It, Darlings!!!!!!!! Where The Hell Is My TONY Nomination--Part Two!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I was about to say, girls, before we were so rudely interrupted, Best Actor In A Musical is another strong category.  It sure was a season for actors.  If it were up to me, I would jointly
award it to the Messrs. Burstein and Raines for their work in "Follies," but I think the "Newsies" ground swell might favor hot n' hunky Jeremy Jordan, who also proved his mettle in a short lived thing called "Bonnie And Clyde."  He is not Warren Beatty, but he is on the Musical Theater Fast Track!!!!!!!!  This should be one of the more interesting categories to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Actress In A Musical--Jan Maxwell, "Follies"
Audra McDonald, "The Gershwins' Porgy And Bess"
                                                                            Cristina Millotti, "Once"
Kelli O'Hara, "Nice Work If You Can Get It"
                                                                            Laura Osnes, "Bonnie And Clyde"
This one comes down to just two gals--Jan Maxwell and Audra McDonald!!!!!!!
Will Audra win her fifth (and first Lead Actress) TONY award for a Bess that makes this show demand to be renamed "Bess" (which should not be the case)?????  Or will Jan Maxwell, the most acerbic Phyllis in "Follies" this side of Alexis Smith pick up the prize for channeling Alexis????????  This is the closest race of them all, and while I am going to go with Jan, I would not be surprised (or altogether unhappy) if Audra took home the award!!!!!!!!   Just think how poor Miss Peters feels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Supporting Actor In A Play--Christian Borle, "Peter And The Starcatcher"
Michael Cumpsty, "End Of The Rainbow"
Tom Edden, "One Man, Two Guv'nors"
Andrew Garfield, "Arthur Miller's Death Of A
                                    Salesman"
                                                                                          Jeremy Shamos, "Clybourne Park"

Here is the most perplexing category.  Will the 'Salesman' ground swell direct the award to pretty boy Andrew Garfield, or to veteran performer Michael Cumpsty????  The others you can just about forget it--this is another slug out between two actors, the Old and New Guard.

Best Supporting Actress In A Play--Linda Emond, "Arthur Miller's "Death Of A
                                       Salesman"
Spencer Kayden, "Don't Dress For Dinner"
                                                                                              Celia Keenan-Bolger, Peter And The
                                        Starcatcher"
                                                                                                Judith Light, "Other Desert Cities"
                                                                                                Condola Rashad, "Stick Fly"

Let's see....I am telling you, if Divine had played Linda Loman I am certain he would have been TONY nominated.  It is an almost foolproof part for an actress, and Linda Emond is a very accomplished one, who merits a place here.  But so does Judith Light; even though Linda Lavin originated this role at the Newhouse, that theater is Off Broadway, so Judith is originating it on Broadway, and, frankly, I hope she wins.  As for  Miss Keenan-Bolger, or whatever her name is, after her disappointing turn as Mary in the ENCORES 'Merrily,' I am convinced she is the Princess Of The Overrated."  Send her back to the Midwest, or wherever the hell she came from, at once!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Supporting Actor In A Musical--Philip Boykin, "The Gershwins' Porgy
                                          And Bess"
                                                                                                     Michael Ceveris, "Evita"
                                                                                                     David Alan Grier, "The Gershwins'
                                           Porgy And Bess"
Michael McGrath, "Nice Work, If You
                                            Can Get It"
                                                                                                      Josh Young, "Jesus Christ Superstar"

Forget Michael McGrath, and that show in general!!!!!!!! As for Josh Young, I hear he is a compelling Judas, but for those of us old enough to remember Ben Vereen and Murray Head; I mean, come on!!!!!!!!  What a slap at "Evita"--the most thankless role in the show gets nominated.  And two 'Porgy" cast members.  But one of those is David Alan Grier, good actor, indeed, and he is playing the best part in the show next to Bess--Sportin' Life.  As far as I can see, the award is his!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Supporting Actress In A Musical--Elizabeth A. Davis, "Once"
                                                                                                            Jayne Houdyshell, "Follies"
Judy Kaye, "Nice Work If You
                                                Can Get It"
Jessie Mueller, "On A Clear Day
                                                 You Can See Forever"
                                                                                                                Da'Vine Joy Randolph, "Ghost,
                                                  The Musical"

I have a couple of objections here.  First, who or what is that last one?  I guess she must be playing Whoopi's role, with a name like that. But she ain't  Whoopi.  If she were, I would say give her the award. But she ain't.  The second, where the hell is Elaine Page????????? She should be in here, for "Follies."  Jayne was great, and I am going with her, but Elaine rated a mention!!!!!!!  As for Jessie Mueller, where is David Turner, so enchanting, in his category?  They were the two reasons only to sit through the train wreck that was the 'Clear Day' revival.  And they should both have been nominated!!!!!!!!!!!   But hell, they didn't even nominate Bernadette!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to wrap this up, darlings, so here goes. No matter what, I cannot see "Follies" and "Arthur Miller's Death Of A Salesman" beating out their competition in their revival categories.  I sure hope Jeff Calhoun beats out Diane Paulus for his work in "Newsies," and we all know Mike Nichols has got the prize wrapped up already.  So, until Meryl plays Willy (which I predict she will, someday!!!!!!!!) we will have to content ourselves here.

As for the rest of us, girls, we will have to wait till Sunday, June 10!!!!!!

Hope your TONY party is as fabulous as mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!
