Now Here, Girls Is The Perfect Antidote For The Ides Of March!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those out there getting skittish over this date, either from my previous post, or your own personal experience, consider the fact that on this date, this evening, in 1956, 57 years ago tonight, "My Fair Lady" opened on Broadway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did the producers know what they were doing, opening on the Ides Of March????????? I think so. They wanted to tempt fate, they thought it might amuse G.B. Shaw, plus, I am sure they were fully aware, before the Overture began, that they were coming into town with a certified Musical Theater Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, for whomever this date might get you down, just remember this loverly fact, and you will be able to carry on!!!!!!!!!!!
Imagine hearing that glorious Overture (one of the Top Ten in Musical Theater History!!!!!!) that first night!!!!!!!!!!!! Or beholding those Cecil Beaton costumes in all their glory; none moreso than during the "Ascot Gavotte." And how about hearing Julie Andrews, on the threshold of what has turned out to be a legendary career, hitting that final note, on "I Could Have Danced All Night?????"
Girls, I am getting chills, just thinking about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guess you know what we will be listening to tonight!!!!!!!!!!!! What brilliant irony!!!!!!!!!!!!
But not the only example. Consider the evening of December 8, 1954!!!!!!!!!
The date, as some of us out there know, is the Feast Of The Immaculate Conception!!!!!!!!! But do you know what play opened on Broadway that night, back in 1954??????????????????
"The Bad Seed." Need I say more, darlings??????????????????????
