If Only I Looked Like This, I Could Have An Alternate Career!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am talking, darlings, about Elizabeth Allen as Laura Deane on "Bracken's World." That was a show on NBC, aired Friday nights at 10PM. It ran for one season, during 1969-70, in an attempt to jump on the "Valley Of The Dolls" camp bandwagon, which was then just evolving. Except for the episode where Carolyn Jones played Paula Shannon, the show never reached the camp level of the 1967 movie of the Susann classic.
Eleanor Parker, fresh from her own camp as the Baroness in "The Sound Of Music" (but then, she did not stand a change; how could she compete with the likes of Julie Andrews, Heather Menzies, and Angela Cartwright?????????) tried to butch it up as Sylvia Caldwell, who came on like she was the head of Century Studios, but it was actually John Bracken, voiced, like John Forsythe on "Charlie's Angels," by Warren Stevens. Sylvia was actually the daughter of the studio's former head, David Caldwell, which brought things to a head in "King David," the episode featuring Carolyn Jones as Paula Shannon.
But it was Elizabeth Allen, as Laura Deane, the head of the Century Studiios' Talent School (euphemistic title for an acting coach!!!!!!!!!!!) who I wanted to be. With her career get up. and the way, in the sweeping opening credits, she would sail onto the set, to the haunting theme song, as though it were she running the studio, she was priceless! Like a goddess!!!!!!! I wanted to be Laura then, and I do, now! Only I don't like anything like Elizabeth Allen. Would that I did, girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I always wondered how much technique was explored in Laura's acting classes. Maybe we should all explore our girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And no problem with our girdles, like Kathy Bates in "Fried Green Tomatoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
