So, This Is What The World Has Come To!!!!!!!!!!! MERYL STREEP???? Is Playing Aunt March In The Latest "Litttle Women" Remake!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                  Have we reached a declining point in our culture, darlings, where Meryl Streep --yes, the DIVINE MERYL--just one year shy of 70, has to now take on roles originated by such plain faced types as Edna May Oliver, Flora Robson, Margaret Hamilton, and the Kemble-Cooper sisters, simply because of her age?

                                 When I heard MERYL had joined the cast of Greta Gerwig's  ("Lady Bird") upcoming remake of "Little Women," I naturally thought MERYL was playing Marmee.  I mean that would be just PERFECT, wouldn't it, darlings?????????  But no!  She is playing a role originated by Edna Mae Oliver in the still definitive (and always will be!) 1933 version--spinster Aunt March!!!!!!!!!!!

                                   Now, Eliza Scanlen, fresh from the evil Amma in "Sharp Objects" is taking on the role of Beth. So, now, instead of admiring her evil machinations, viewers will get to cry copious tears, because Beth is the one who dies.  It is a smart career move on Eliza's part, not only working with Gerwig, MERYL, and Saoirse Ronan, who is playing Jo, Emma Watson, of 'Harry Potter' fame,  playing Meg, and Florence Pugh (who the hell is she?)  cast as Amy.  OK, fine!  And smart on Eliza's part, to follow up with such a sharply contrasting role!!!!!!!!!  But who on earth is playing Marmee?  "Little Women" cannot be done without her, and Spring Byington (of the 1933 version, and she was a lesbian!!!!!!!) owns the role, to boot!  Since Gerwig is helming it, I would have bet on Laurie Metcalf, but with that face, how could she exude maternal warmth?  I could actually see Kathy Bates; she is the right age, and has the versatility for it!

                                   However, I see Laura Dern--a good choice--is listed in the cast, so I think she will be playing Marmee!  And she will be fabulous!  I mean, does this film have the most prestigious female cast, or what?  I will see it, just for the cast alone.

                                    But how many times can "Little Women" be redone?  Especially when the 1933 version, with Katherine Hepburn, no less, as Jo, is definitive perfection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                     As Jo March herself might say, "Christopher Columbus!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
