If Nan Barlow Had Gone To The Witches' Dance, Looking Like This, She Would Never Have Been Abducted!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am talking, of course, about that great late Fifties, early Sixties, classic "The City Of The Dead," released in this country, in 1960, as "Horror Hotel."
The lodging in question is the Raven's Inn in Whitewood, Massachusetts, run by Mrs. Nywles. You have GOT to see the party sequence, when Teachers' Pet, Nan Barlow (played by Venetia Stevenson, making her film debut!) decides to attend, undresses from her robe, into this trampy number, but mistakenly goes to the party in spinster garb. I am telling you, if she had emerged from her room, dressed as above, the witches would never thought of her as a virgin, and never would have abducted her.
But that was Nan. The perfect student, but not so smart outside the classroom . She should have paid more attention to what was going on around her.
Oh, and girls, you have to see "The City And The Dead" cut, where Elizabeth Selwyn, (Patricia Jessel) being burned at the stake for being a witch, on March 3, 1692, delivers her full monologue, where she curses out the entire town and vows to serve Satan, while her accomplice, Jethro Keene (Valentine Dyall) does the same. It is simply fabulous, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, tea and dainties here, dolls! And the room service is really awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Consorting with the devil!!

ReplyDeleteVictoria,
But the Devil requires a virgin
sacrifice. If she had gone in
that trampy thing, she would have
been safe!
