Darlings, We Just LOVE Aunt Pittypat!!!!!!!!!!!!
Girls, coming down off of that high which comes with reading "Gone With The Wind," it is time to mention one of its unsung characters!!!!! Now, I love absolutely everyone in the story--even that stiff necked spinster India Wilkes, and that white trash Emmie Slattery--but the one I simply ADORE is Aunt Pittypat!!!!!!
You have to hand it to her, girls, because she has a great racket going. She flutters about and patters her oversized body about on little feet, but damn well knows how to host a party, and knows when it is time to bring out the last of the fine Madeira!!!! And she has her priorities straight, girls; when the war is creeping into her front yard, and she has to evacuate, what does she reach for?????? Her hat boxes!!!!! I just love this scene in the movie, because Laura Hope Crewes nails Aunt Pittypat superbly, but also offers a valuable lesson--when traveling, even if evacuating, you had better take your best designer items, or else!!!!!!
Aunt Pitty got everyone--Scarlett, Melanie, Uncle Peter--to take care of her, so she never had to do anything!!!!! Wish I could say the same. She even got a restaurant named after her in Atlanta--Aunt Pittypat's Porch!!!!! I have not dined there, yet, but you can bet, when I go there, I will dine there my first night, and take a souvenir glass or mug, with her picture on it, with me!!!!!
Who could not love Aunt Pittypat??? Sweet and charming, but cunning in her own way as Scarlett--able to stand up to Dr. Meade at the crisis of Melanie's death--and rules the socially tight community (assisted by Mrs. Merriwether and Mrs. Meade--with kid gloves that conceal an iron fist!!!!!!
So, here is a salute to Aunt Pittypat! Let her be a lesson to you, girls!!!! When crisis comes, the first thing you take are the designer items!!!!
Dolce Gabana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure you know that Billie Burke was offered the role first. She would have been fun with that fluttery voice, but Laura was perfect!
ReplyDeleteI recall having read about Billie Burke and the part. Imagine--Aunt Pitty and Glinda in the same year!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHowever, Laura being less of a known name, AND a having been a great stage actress to boot, really nailed the part, bringing an authenticity and identity to it and with her that no one else could match!!!!!!!
But really, Yankees in Georgia! How did they ever get in?!
