This Should NOT Be Allowed, Darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have no intention of seeing it, darlings, let me tell you! On the evening of December 5, NBC is going to broadcast a version of "The Sound Of Music." It stars Carrie Underwood--like, who the hell is she? And who cares?--as Maria, and, to Broadway things up a bit, fooling folks who are dumb enough to think so, that this is an A-list product, Audra McDonald as the Mother Superior, and Laura Benanti, as The Baroness.
Now, I am sure Audra will sing the bejesus (pardon the pun, girls!!!!!!!) out of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," but, really, how can she compete with Peggy Wood? I have less of a problem with her being Black, of which I doubt Austria in the Thirties had none, but a super, sexy looking Mother Abbess?????? Back in this day??????? I mean, come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is enough to arouse the ire of Theater Queens, and Musical Theater Queens, in particular. The 1965 movie, which is just two years of celebrating its 50th Anniversary, is by now considered the DEFINITIVE version of the story. Seeing anyone less than Julie Andrews as Maria, let alone Charmian Carr, Heather Menzies, Angela Cartwright, and the rest, as The Children, will not do!!!!!!!!
And the way Robert Wise and Ted McCord sumptuously photographed Salzburg and its environs, even the Hollywood interiors, turning this film into a template for on location filming, will be missed. It will be cheap and shoddy looking.
Not to mention, for those of us who relish camp, the dead-on, iconic portraits of Eleanor Parker, as the Baroness and Norma Varden as housekeeper Frau Schmidt!!!!!!!!!!!! And how are you going to find a hotter Rolf than Dan Truhitte?????????
Those behind this project are playing with fire, let alone rousing the ire of those of us--and there are legions--who take SOM seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am urging those of you out there
with taste to boycott this presentation; even it people watch, it will go nowhere, it will not achieve the endurance of the 1965 film!!!!!!!!!!! But don't even give it a chance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Darlings--
"I hate to have to say it, but I very firmly feel,
THIS Maria will not be an asset to the Abbey!!!!!!!!!"
