The Damage Is Fabulous, Girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a week it was! After suffering so much DAD ,(Dental Anxiety Disorder) Monsieur surprised me on Friday, with tickets to "Heathers--The Musical!" Let me tell you, darlings, this is the Sensation Of The Moment, because I have not seen such a gathering of Theater Queens and Fag Hags, since the recent revival of "Follies!"
This could be the Bitch Fest Of Musical Theater. It channels your Inner Bitch--those of us who want to be Heathers--and those of us (most of the audience) who weren't, get a fantasy ride about destroying their high school enemies. Not unlike Carrie at the prom.
The movie, made in 1988, became a cult favorite, and featured a young Christina Slater, Winona Ryder, and Shannen Doherty. Christian is the only one who seems to still be going strong, so good for him. And Winona was an unforgettable; Abigail in "The Crucible," but that was back in 1996--18 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Within that time, a lot has happened at high schools and other public places--Columbine being the chief one--so, for some, this could be uncomfortable. I admit to feeling so, when the character J.D. , wonderfully played by Ryan McCartan, dresses all in black, with a black floor length raincoat, suggesting the Columbine boys. I don't recall Christian Slater, dressed like that. Barret Wilbert Weed, very Winona looking, plays Veronica, and she has a superb voice. While the score will not win any prizes, the big ensemble numbers hold your interest. and one--"My Dead Gay Son"--is a genuine show stopper.
The most show stopping moment of all is when, out of the mist, the Heathers (Jessica Keenan Wynn, as Heather Chandler, Elle McLemore as Heather McNamara, and Alice Lee as Heather Duke) make their initial entrance. The crowd goes wild; this is this generation's equivalent to "Beautiful Girls" in "Follies."
I can't help wondering what a former Heather (like, say Roberta!) would have thought of all this???? Personally, I think it is a hoot, and so did the audience! "Heathers--The Musical" is audience show, with tongue firmly placed in cheek. For status, you simply have GOT to see it, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean, "What's your damage, Heather?" "So very!"
