Round Heeled Tramps, And Boobs On The Make!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                    Ah, yes, New York in the Forties.  When even prostitutes dressed to look glamorous!!!!!!!!!  The boobs on the make, by the way, are not female, but rather the businessmen type, like Lou Donovan, in this novel, who goes about wheeling and dealing from city to city, and wife to mistress!  A comfort in every port, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                     As for the women, they are on the make too.  The wives want to keep their hubbies at home, paying attention to them.  The mistresses want to make their paramours into hubbies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                      Have times changed?   Definitely!  Has this game of roundelay changed?  Not especially.  But the era Dawn Powell writes about--of elegant hotels, bars, and club cars on trains--is so much more glamorous than the sleek but phony times we live in today, where everything is so barren and ugly, rather than glamorous.

                                       But Dawn Powell has the last laugh.  This is the book's best line--

                                       "A good address is a girl's best mother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

                                        Now, that is one thing that has not changed!  Securing a good apartment is the one thing to guarantee success in this town!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
