Darlings, Happy Birthday To A True Spiritual Leader!!!!!!!!!!
Girls, I cannot believe what I am about to say, first, because I thought I would never be old enough to see it, and, second, because the idea is so inconceivable. But today happens to be the birthday of one of My Generation's Leaders--Joan Baez, and she turns....are you ready??? 70!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How can such a thing be possible???? It seems like yesterday when a barefoot, virginal waif (not ME, darlings!!!!) stepped out of the darkness at Club 47, and there was buzz aplenty. Then, the summer of 1959, an 18-year-old Joan stepped onto the stage of the Newport Folk Festival, and stunned the world with the sincerity and purity of her voice and form. Joan paved the way, girls--she marched, froze, and sang for us, often in nothing but bare feet and burlap. She sang at Woodstock!!!!
She made us into a Generation of Social Activists, and she Shaped The World!!!!!!
Joan Baez has done more, with her artistry, for social consciousness in the Free World, than anyone since Indira Gandhi!!!!!!
This weekend, I myself, The Raving Queen, have been honoring Joan by channeling her, performing for Monsieur (who was stunned) and audiences today in Penn Station--all her classics--"Long Black Veil", "Geordie," "Fennario," "The House Carpenter," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," and "The House Of The Rising Sun." That's right, darlings, I am proud to represent Joan, for all that she has represented US over the years!!!!!!!
So today we salute Joan with love on her 70th birthday. And hopes she writes a song about Tyler Clementi that we could do as a duet this summer at Newport!!!! Just think, honey--Joan and moi! Two vessels of Purity!!!!!!
Happy Birthday, Joan!!!!! May you go on Forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
