Two Kates In One Year?????????? Readers' Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may recall how disappointed I was, earlier this year, by "The Alice Network."  Well, for those of you who were, rejoice, because Kate Atkinson's "Transcription" is everything the other novel was not.

Julian Armstrong, during the Forties, in London, becomes a transcriber of meetings with Nazi sympathizers, which she herself eventually infiltrates,  Wait till you meet Mrs. Scapeia, a real card carrying Swastika bitch, who would not only sing "Tomorrow Belongs To Me," but would probably get down on her knees, and fellate Hitler!!!!!!!!!!!!  Ewwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!

Twists, and turns, and suspense.  And wait till you get to the scene where Mrs. Scapeia gets hers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once the war ends, Julian goes to work for the BBC, in television.  She ekes out a nice career for herself, but discovers someone is following her.  And when she gets a note saying, "You will pay for what you did," she realizes her troubles are not over, and that her efforts during the war will follow her for life.

Espionage is not my genre, but Kate Atkinson's writing is so polished and assured, I could not put the book down.  She knows about language, caring about characters, and compelling narrative.  Though I hesitated about reading this one, when it first came out, I am glad I eventually did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I learned readers can count on Kate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                                          Don't miss this one, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
