That's right, darlings, Robert Altman's "Nashville," which I consider to be the "Citizen Kane" of our generation, hit the 50 year mark this year.
I remember when it first came out, and the impact that it had. Oh, my God, Ronee Blakley as Barbara Jean!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How I wanted to be her!!!!!!!!!!!!! And my then best friend, Doug, wanted to be Shelley Duvall as L.A. Joan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would still like to be Barbara Jean, come to think of it. I do sing.
Most of all I want "Nashville" to have a special anniversary screening this year. David and I saw it several years back at the Film Forum, and I was so beguiled I went back several days later to take in another screening by myself.
So, here is to "Nashville" at 50. And to its stars, alive and dead.
As Barbara Jean says, "......if you're down by the river, I hope you drop in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
