Even before I knew who Dolly Parton was, I loved the song "Jolene," and the voice that sang it.
As her career climbed, I discovered that, aside from her non-financial assets, she was a wonderfully comedic actress, a smart businesswoman, a humanitarian and a gracious human being. This and being one of the top C and W stars in Nashville, and the world.
Her husband, Carl Dean, died only seventeen months ago. It is said when one love dies, another soon joins it. Having been married for 60 years, I am sure Dolly and Carl are together again, and I am happy for them.
But her presence and talent on Earth shall be deeply missed.
For me, the saddest thing, aside from the departure of these great talents, is that no one seems to be coming up the ranks to replace them. Taylor Swift may be hot now, but will she be mentioned twenty years from now? I am not so sure.
Rest In Peace, Dolly. Songs, movies, charities, you did it all.

This one really hurts. Jane Fonda put it well: Dolly Parton was one-of-a-kind authentic and real, a wonderful human being full of love and light but no pretensions and zero tolerance for BS. Aside from her boundless talent, humor, warmth and charisma she was also probably the very last of the apolitical iconic entertainers. She spearheaded highly effective philanthropic efforts and support for minority groups, while deftly sidestepping the trap of personal political posturing. That's a lost art in our era of 24/7 social media celebrity diarrhea: Bruce, Barbra, De Niro and Cher should have taken a leaf from Dolly (Cher also needs to lay off her addiction to ALL CAPS POSTING, but thats another story for another day).
Think I'm gonna celebrate Dolly Parton this week by playing all her songs on my ancient iPod, and maybe do a rewatch of 9 to 5 just for the laughs. RIP, you glorious woman!
My grandkids received her books every month when they were little.
I saved some of them.
My Dear, Yes, this is a sad one. She was a talent, a humanitarian and a classy, gracious person. Not too many in show biz like that.
Victoria, I am so glad Dolly promoted reading in children. Yes, those books should become collector items, hang on to them.
