A Victorian Farewell To September!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you believe we are three fourths through 2025?  And tomorrow is the first day of October, and Julie Andrews turns 90?????????????????

I thought August flew by, but September was faster.  We saw some gems on "Svengoolie," we went out to dinner many times, went to the 60th anniversary screening of "The Sound Of Music," and then saw "Bernadette Of Lourdes," which I will write about in another post.  Of course, it can't hold a candle to Jennifer Jones And Company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We saw The Heights Players do a marvelous performance of "Pippin."  What a surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I complete my Victorian reading trip and am back in the present day.  I may report on that later.

All in all, it was not a "hot September" but a fast one!  I can't think of any better way to say goodbye to the end of Summer month than this--

Here is Christine Ebersole singing "Another Winter In A Summer Town," from the musical "Grey Gardens."

Enjoy, girls, and think about what we are in for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                         See you next month, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What If This Blanche Played The Other Blanche???????????????????????

Now, don't get in a snit, girls, because it isn't like anyone could improve on Vivien Leigh!  Not that her performance has stopped others from trying.

I always thought, good as she was, Rue McClanahan was an underrated actress.  I would have loved to have seen her take on Blanche DuBois. What fascinates me is Blanche Deveraux was from Georgia, while Blanche DuBois was from Louisianne, so the Southern speech patterns would have to be different.

I would love to have seen how Rue would adopt a different Southern accent from Blanche Deveraux.  It is unfortunate she would never have a chance, because I think she would have been magnetic.

Blanche DuBois is the acting dream of most actresses, and some Theater Queens, too!  I know, I am waiting for my chance!  I wish Rue and some others had had their chance.

Meanwhile, darlings, whom would you like to see play Blanche DuBois?

My choice, bar none, is Lily Rabe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girls, It Is Good Of Kind, But If You Have Already Seen It, Watch Something Else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All of us are going to do just that tonight, as "Svengoolie" presents, at 8PM, "The Night Strangler," which we have seen before.  The desperation to get viewers is so palpable; they had to insert a tramp into the poster to get an audience.  Why?  Darren McGavin was not hot enough?  Well, come to think of it, whoever had the hots for Darren McGavin?  Not me, that is for sure.

For those who do, go for it, because this film should be perfect for you.  For me, and our household, one viewing is enough.

Tonight is a "Svengoolie" double feature, meaning that after this movie, they will show another, which is done about once a month.  I would rather see the second movie being shown--"Amityville 3-D."  It will be real trash, but it could be hilariously entertaining.

At my age, I cannot stay up until one o' clock.  The lights go out at 11:30PM, and that is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't be bothered watching this a second time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would rather work on my dress patterns, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guk Is Guk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Long before there was slime, darlings, boomers out there remember all sorts of messy toys, from Silly Putty to Crazy Foam.  I can remember a friend and I playing "patty cake" with the latter.  We were fine, until one of us missed, and got it over our shirts.  I don't know what came over us, but we rubbed Crazy Foam over the sofa, walls, and even the television.  Our mothers both had a fit.

Though it was nothing compared to how my friend's mother treated me during our last two years of high school.  But that is for another time.

The phrase "Guk is Guk" was used in ads on TV.  I never owned Guk--I think my parents were wise on that one.  But the slogan just popped into my head the other day, and I wondered if it is still around.

Could the man who created 1958's "The Blob" have had something to do with it???????????????

Gojira Sends His Love To One And All!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing is nicer than a happy Gojira, who comes in peace to bring love and happiness to children and adults everywhere.  Gojira has certainly helped to make my day today, and doesn't he look so handsome, darlings????????????

So, thank you, Gojira for brightening up our day.  You truly are the King, and loved by all.

Hats off to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, This Outfit Is Sure To Be A Winner At The MET Gala!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is Patracia Laggan--Who? Who cares?--in 1954's "Devil Girl From Mars."  No, I have not seen this yet, and Baby is excited about it, but look at that costume!!!!!!!!!  Even in such a cheesy flick, there is still elegance.  And wait till you see her razor-sharp fingers.  I am telling you; she preceded Freddy Krueger by decades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Who knew????????????????????

So, dolls, I am telling you, look to the Forties and Fifties for fashion.

The old stuff never goes out of style!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girls, I Am Telling You, This Is The Fashion Look For Fall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forties and Fifties outfits never lose their style, because they are so much elegant than most of the trash being turned out today.  Just look at Nancy Kelly in 1956's "The Bad Seed."  Even when on the verge of hysteria--and I am telling you, you have never seen such hysterics; Nancy set the gold standard for such, till 1961, when Veronica Cartwright came along, in "The Children's Hour--" she manages to look coiffed.  That perfectly pressed blouse, the pencil skirt, the hair and make-up; oh, my God, darlings, wouldn't you like to look like this, hysterical or not??????????????

The movie version of "The Bad Seed" set the gold standard for murderous child drama,  Viewers should keep an eye on Nancy and her changing outfits, as she makes this film a fashion show delight.

Of course, some of these outfits will need to be custom made, but then, a pristine closet is worth it, isn't it, darlings????????????????

Especially if not dealing with murderous offspring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time To Welcome A New Reader, Girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The follower indicator has been on 138 for several days.  This has been overdue, but, hons, you know how life interferes.

So, welcome, Tysa Goodrich!  I am glad you found your way to this blog.  I hope you find it entertaining and informative.  I try to keep things light, but I do occasionally go to some dark places.  We are all human, right?

A big welcome from myself and everyone on here, Tysa.  May this blog--which goes great with coffee--prove to be amusing and informative for you.  Feel free to comment on here, anytime.

This welcome would not be complete, without this blog's unofficial theme song.  So, here we go!

                                      Here we are and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never Forgotten!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fifteen years ago, this evening, Tyler Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge, and alerted society to the tragic results of bullying.

I always wonder about his family and siblings on this day.  And wish them well.

I also think about Tyler.  Today, he would have been in his early Thirties, maybe with someone, and, while still pursuing music, I think he was smart enough to have gone into scientific research.   What a loss of talent.

But even if untalented, this story is inexcusable and should be remembered every year. No child should have to have suffered what Tyler did, nor taken their life.  And his perpetrators--Ravi and Wei-- were not held accountable for what they did.  Karma will catch up with you two, if it has not already.

And to think this is the start of Rosh Hashanah!  Take a moment to say a pray to commemorate Tyler.

He was deserving of so much more.

Today Is The Day Proserpina Goes Back To Hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, darlings, it is the first day of Autumn.  Some think it is tomorrow, but I was taught it was the 21st.  Tomorrow is a tragic anniversary, which I will post tomorrow.

Last night, we felt the crispness of the season in the air, and I, for one, welcomed it. While it was a pretty mild Summer--some say the mildest since 2012--I look forward to cooler weather and cozier reading days.  Plus, the Fall cultural scene--books, movies, and plays.  I hopefully anticipate surprise gems.

Nevertheless, Proserpina is packed and off to Hell.  Which is why the leaves turn and wither, the weather gets colder, the night comes sooner, and the snow lays on the ground.  If MacDonald Carey were here right now, he would talk about the "Days Of Our Lives."

I still have plenty of life to live, girls!  So, happy First Day Of Autumn.  We will miss you Proserpina but look forward to seeing you in six months.

And I pray for a less brutal Winter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"One Last Caress.....It's Time To Dress....For....Fall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Alas, darlings, it is a sad time of year. This is the official end of Summer; Proserpina is, at this moment, packing her bags and saying goodbye to mother, before returning to Hell tomorrow, for the next six months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was a mild Summer, weather wise.  We got to see some movies, some shows, and I got some time in with Hamlet, The Algonquin Cat.  I succeeded in all my reading endeavors, from "Jonathan Strange And Mr. Norrell" to my Victorian re reads.

Now, I have returned to the present day; I am currently rereading "The Bad Seed," which is SO much fun, darlings, but I have a pile of contemporary fiction to get through, and then there is The New York Times' Most Notable Books and Five Works Of Fiction Lists to be perused and read.  Yes, it looks like it is going to be a busy Fall.

It was lovely having you all readers this Summer.  I do hope you return in the Fall.

Though Summer is at its end, The Raving Queen is sure not to run out of adventures!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See you in the Fall, girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girls, Join Us Tonight, At 8PM, As "Svengoolie" Presents The Universal Favorite--1955's "Tarantula!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Poster artists of that time always had to have the monster clutching a helpless, barefoot beauty in its hands or jaws.  We don't get that here, but there is Mara Corday and her 1950's bosoms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Tarantula" was a big hit for Universal, and one of the best of the Fifties giant monster movies.  Yet, though this was Universal, I have to say the tarantula in this film is one obviously photographed under glass and doesn't give the performance it should. Compare this to 1958's "Earth Vs. The Spider," which is from the lower tiered AIP, where the spider is much more realistic and terrifying.  And on a lower budget, to boot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But "Tarantula" tonight will be refreshing.  It is at the regular time and fits the fabric of the "Svengoolie" show better.  Though it was a special treat to see "The Bad Seed" last week, it somehow did not fit in with the "Svengoolie" concept.  Though how we just LOVED Nancy Kelly's hysterics, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, join us all, including Baby, for "Tarantula!"

Wait till you see Leo G. Carroll's acromegalic face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's Have Some Fun, Girls, Discussing Baby Gojira's Cheesy Movie Pick This Week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully, soon Baby will get away from this ABC-TV 70's phase he seems to be in.  The film's colors are fading, the actors in them are virtually nonexistent, and some of them should be returned to the film vaults for good.

But not before getting a look at Gloria Swanson in "Killer Bees."  Now, the ad says this was her TV debut.  But does that take into account her guest appearances on "The Carol Burnett Show," appearing in the "Sunset Boulevard" parody sketches??????????????

Let's get to the point.  Gloria and the bees are the best actors in the film.  Edward Albert, Jr. does not disguise the fact that he is doing this just for pay, and Kate Jackson once more begs the question of how she got anywhere as an actress.  Or a non-actress I would say.

But, darlings, once she and Gloria lock eyes, there is no question that Gloria is going to kick off, with Kate becoming the new Bee Queen.  I could see this coming a mile away. And if she and hubby Edward have children, and one turns out to be a daughter, well, you know what future is in store for her.

I loved the shots of the bees covering the miniature house.  They look so cute and loving.  But only if you are a Bee Queen.

Queens of all type will enjoy this, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But please, Baby, find some more 50's films, please????????????????????

Who Would Have Thought A Screening Of This Film Would Have Triggered Past Emotional Trauma?????????????????????????????

I had been looking forward to it for weeks.  David and I had tickets for Saturday, September 13, at the Regal Union Cinema in Manhattan to view a 60th anniversary screening of "The Sound Of Music."  But the unexpected happened.

First, David was recovering from a cold and did not feel like going. So, we got our good friend, Chris, who knows his movies, to accompany me, which was a delight.  I learned that he had never seen the film on screen--the only way to see it--and was happy to share this experience with him.

And the audience--even a group dressed like nuns-- reacted normally.  During the opening, when the camera first spots Julie Andrews, applause shook the theater.  And when she unleashed that voice, well, the audience gasped.  As they should.  The audience also applauded loudly at the end of "Do Re Mi," and at the end of the film, as the Von Trapps fled over the mountains.

I did all the above.  The ending is doubly sad for me, because when they go down the hill on the other side, it is like saying goodbye to Charmian Carr and Heather Menzies, who died, respectively in 2017 and 2018.

Now, I had seen this film at least a dozen times.  Yet I found myself crying in the most unexpected places.  I cried through the entire film, something I had never done before.  Why?

The answer did not come till evening.  Of course, I was overcome by the beauty and craftsmanship of the film, the performances, the musical numbers, but there was something more going on, which I finally realized.  This was the 60th anniversary, which would have made it 1965.  That year, for my 11th birthday present, my parents took me to see this film.  It was a seminal moment of my childhood.  Sadly, both my parents are now gone, and this was the first time seeing the film with my parents not being alive.  Oh, I had seen it many times, especially by myself, when I was single, but one of my parents was always around.  Ten years ago, the 50th anniversary, David and I went, and my father had then reached his centennial.  But now none of my parents, or grandparents, who had also seen and loved the film were around, and the movie, much as I loved it, reminded me of this.  I should have realized this instantly.

Alas, then the film went on to trigger several other past traumas, which I want to share and would like some feedback on.  Let's start with a minor one.  This year, my great-niece graduated from college, and I could not have been happier for her.  The funny thing is, my sister, her grandmother, called me, reminding me to send a card, which I already had.  That did not bother me at all; I can't keep track of all the birthdays and celebrations.  I sent my great-niece a card, with a $100 check.  I did it gladly, but I have never received a Thank You note, nor am I completely sure that cash was checked.  I emailed my nephew, her father, and he said he would see that she cashed the check.  I trust him but not getting a Thank You note hurt.

Ah, but there is worse.  Three years ago, a friend of mine--I will call her Andrea--was throwing a bat mitzvah for her daughter.  I remember her carrying the child; I was even in the hospital the day after birth and held the child in my arms.  Over the years, I enjoyed seeing both mother and child at a series of Chanukah parties; Andrea gave the best ones.  They were living outside the city, and David and I were in Brooklyn.  Getting there was a chore, and then Covid hit, and the world changed.  The last time I remember seeing mother and child was when the latter was 8, and we all went to a screening of "The Wizard Of Oz" at the Film Forum.

So, now we come to 2022, and the bat mitzvah.  I had no reason to think we were not going to be invited, so I was devastated--and still am--when I found out David and I were not invited.  A mutual friend of us all was concerned and asked Andrea why we were excluded.  She said because we had not been a part of the child's life!

Huh?  I saw them when we were both available; over time that had become more difficult, and we kept in touch by email.  And Andrea had had the child in vitro.  Before the procedure, she had even asked me for my "swimmers," but my sister and I talked it over, and said that would not be a good idea.  I agreed.

It took me five days to get over it, at the time.  The movie brought it back, with tears behind my eyes and feeling as though I had been punched in the stomach.  And that feeling came back and is with me now.

But I will give Andrea one credit.  Wanting to do the right thing, I sent the child a card and a gift--a Barnes And Noble gift certificate.  The child sent me an email thank you note, with a picture of herself.  I was touched, it helped a little, and I am sure Andrea had something to do with it.

Sadly, though, I will never have the relationship with Andrea again that I had before.

At least the daughter sent a Thank You note!  But my great-niece?  Why not?

It gets better, as the saying goes.  Seven years ago, my father passed away.  Because he died in February of 2018, we waited till Spring to have the service and the interment.  It was at the latter that trauma was suffered.

My nephew drove my sister into New Brunswick, NJ, where David and I took a bus to, and we were picked up by them.  Now, we were all upset but my sister seemed more so, as she acted very nasty that day, and at one point, my nephew, whom I had never seen this way, blew up at her.  I understood where he was coming from, but not my sister.

My other nephew, his wife, and their sweet dog, Lugi, who was alive then, joined us at the grave.  My sister acted like she could not wait to get out of there.  And this was our father we were burying!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or was it?  Because the truth is, my sister and I are 14 years apart; she was the child of my mother's first marriage.  That husband died, at 29, of a brain tumor. Seven years later, she married my father, and seven years after that, I was born.  So, my sister never knew her real father.  I learned, years later, that my sister nursed a hurt over not having my father adopt her.  I never thought of it; from infancy she was my sister.  David said it might have had something to do with my mother's inheritance from the first husband.  All the parties are gone, so we may never know the answer.

But two things that day I cannot excuse.  Because my parents were now reunited in the earth, at the ceremony's end, I wanted to stand over the graves, reading the last paragraph from Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights."   I am surely Emily would have been honored.  My sister abruptly dismissed this, saying we had no time for this, and then, THEN, she turns to David, looking at him directly, and referencing me, says nastily, "Now he is your problem!!!!!!!!!"

What the-- I can never forget this or excuse it.  I was upset, but my emotions were not validated by my sister.  No one else said anything.  Maybe, like me, they were too stunned by this behavior.

So, this is what my recent viewing of "The Sound Of Music triggered.  All of this still hurts, and it comes up from time to time.  I am currently in one of those times.  I would love reader feedback on what you think.

But I cannot leave without mentioning the one bright spot in all this--Chris.  He was so kind to go with me.  I missed David, but Chris made it enjoyable, and his company and conversation were welcome antidotes to what I was going through. Kudos to Chris!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The slightest, most unexpected thing, can suddenly trigger trauma.  I learned this the hard way, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girls, I Never Thought The Day Would Come--Tonight At 7PM "Svengoolie" Is Showing The A-List Classic "The Bad Seed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

It has to be seen, if you haven't, girls!   A Broadway play adapted to film, with much of its original cast.  Wait till you see Nancy Kelly drop the glass, and hysterically cry, "MONICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"  And that is only early in the film.

This film, about a disturbed murderess who is a child shocked audiences in 1956.   Today, nothing is thought of it, as it is constantly talked about all the time.

Three of the film's players received Oscar nominations--Nancy Kelly, for repeating her TONY Award winning Broadway performance, Patty McCormack for her chilling stage portrayal of the homicidal child, and Eileen Heckart as the grief-stricken mother of one of McCormack's victims.  Her performance is fascinating, because, though drunk, she has all the pieces laid out; she just can't quite put the puzzle together.

With its mixture of drama and camp, "The Bad Seed" cannot be missed.

I am telling you, girls, my mother and I could have played it on Broadway!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See you at 7PM!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Baby Gojira is so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Heights Players Really Hit The Heights, With Their Production Of "Pippin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I have to admit, darlings, I was delightfully surprised.  Last Spring, when this group did 'How To Succeed,' I was so appalled at the inadequacy of the production.  So, when I heard they were going to do "Pippin," I was surprised.  Could such a challenge be met?  I admit I went into the theater with trepidation.  However--

When Sofia Faus as the Leading Player stepped out, and the company assembled to perform "Magic To Do," a classic musical theater opener, I knew we were in good hands, with the right concept, and dancers and voices to match.

Joe Marx was a perfect Pippin; his projection of innocence matched his vocal projection on a classic like "Corner Of The Sky."  Luisa Boyaggi, who played Joanne in The Heights' production of "Company," stopped the show again here, as Berthe/Grandma, with her big number, the sing-along "No Time At All!"

Praise must go to Alicia Kerr, the choreographer, who really did her homework in studying Bob Fosse, because all the dancers moved with such Fosse-esquee motions, it was obvious they had been working hard at this.  And "Pippin" is a show that demands hard work.

Extra credit goes to Hilary Goldman, the director who put the whole together.  This show was helmed by someone who clearly understood the property and had a solid concept for how to stage it at The Heights.

I had forgotten how good a show "Pippin" is.  What a delightful reminder.  Kudos to all involved.

This is the last weekend it runs, so, darlings, HURRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This Was Baby Gojira's Cheesy Movie Pick This Past Wednesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Growing up reading horror magazines, I was given the impression that "The Vampire Bat" was widely regarded as something of a classic, along the lines of the highly superior "The Mystery Of The Wax Museum," which was remade as "House Of Wax," with Vincent Price, twenty years later.

It turned out to be cheesier than I thought and was a perfect choice on Baby's part.

The story makes no sense.  Explaining why reveals spoilers, so if you don't wish to know now, stop reading here.

A German village, not unlike the one in "Frankenstein," is plagued by a series of what seem to be vampire attacks.  People are found dead, drained of blood, with two pin pricks, of a sort, on their necks.

The minute I saw Lionel Atwill's name in the cast, I knew he had something to do with what is going on.  He plays a mad scientist who is somehow extracting blood from the victims to discover the secret of life.  What would seem to be a gigantic bat turns out to be his lab assistant, Emil, going around in Dracula garb, scaling walls and ledges, to get the blood.  What is never explained is how the blood is obtained.  It's not like he can suck it out and then drain it for Atwill.  So, there are a few plot holes.

But it has a great performance by Dwight Frye, given the most screen time I have ever seen him given in a film.  He plays a sort of village idiot named Herman, who has an affection for bats--a la Reinfeld!!!!--and it is heartbreaking when the villagers turn on him, forcing him to commit suicide by throwing himself off a ledge, in a cave they have backed him into.

One unusual thing--when the mob, with flaming torches, are seeking Herman, the flames are colorized, while the rest of the film is not.  Eerie, yes, but why?

Nevertheless, it was cheesy enough for Baby.

Next week, I will try and talk him into "Killer Bees," with Gloria Swanson, if it is available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                                     Baby just loves being entertained!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy "Frank Mills Day", Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, dears, it is that time of year, when I go into the city, stand in front of the Waverly, and sing "Frank Mills."  I always try to do justice to Shelley Plimpton, pictured above, who introduced the song to the world as an Original Cast member of "HAIR."

No one will ever match Shelley, though Allison Case came close in 2009.

I always look forward to singing this song today.  I already played Shelley when I got up.

And speaking of Shelley, here she is, for all to hear.

It would not be "Frank Mills Day," without her.

Here is Shelley, for all to hear!  Happy "Frank Mills Day," girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, Theater Queens!!!!!!!!!!!!! This Will Singularly Ruin The Revival Of "CHESS" On Broadway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darlings, I had to force myself to listen to this overly orchestrated, piercing and elongated sounding version of one of the score's best songs.  Michele's rendition has no warmth or emotion save a desire to show off vocal pyrotechnics.

Judy Kuhn sang it originally on Broadway in 1988, and no one sings it better.  I will prove it.  You listen to both, and tell me which you like better

Here is Judy's version.  Note the different orchestrations, and the warmer, moving tone.  Judy shows HOW to sing this song, and how it SHOULD be sung!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To think Aaron Tveit gave me so much hope, when I heard his "One Night In Bangkok."  Now, Lea has gone and destroyed any hope I had for this revival.

Will someone get Jessie or Celia, please?????????????????????

Oh, My God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did ANNA Actually Allow This????????????????

I have never thought much of Emma Stone as an actress.  She can be reasonably attractive, but, girls, she is not MERYL.  And some writer had the temerity to describe her as "the modern Katherine Hepburn!!!!"  Are you kidding me?  She hasn't an ounce of Hepburn's charisma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who the hell dressed Emma for this?  If this is what we are in from Editorial Content Editor Chloe Malle, then we are getting off to a bad start, especially with the sacred September Issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought Demi Moore posing pregnant and nude was an outrage, but that was art compared to this shot of Emma.  And what the hell is she wearing.  ANNA, reign in Chloe, and fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  That hair, oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I had gotten the job, this NEVER would have happened

                                  ANNA....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Now, About Pip And Estella!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have recently spent the summer reading 19th Century novels, or novels related to that period.  In order, I began with "Jonathan Strange And Mr. Norvell," by Susanna Clarke, continued with "Wide Sargasso Sea," by Jean Rhys, then followed it up with "Jane Eyre," by Chalotte Bronte, then sister Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights, which, after 10 readings, is still my favorite; next came "Great Expectations," by Charles Dickens, "Frankenstein," by Mary Shelley, and, lastly, "The Turn Of The Screw," by Henry James.  The novels are all the more extraordinary because who would have expected such work from two parsonage daughters, a teenage girl, and a man accustomed to writing novels of manners?

On what I think was my fourth reading of "Great Expectations," I have come to the conclusion that Dickens was right.  This novel was famous for having two endings--one where Pip and Estella find love, the other where they go their separate ways.  Dickens wanted the latter, but his publisher insisted the public would want former, so he wrote it that way, However, reading the last sentence in the novel, it can be taken two ways.  And I prefer the Dickensian.

It is so easy to dismiss Estella as a bitch, but she is more than that.  She is a victim; the real manipulative bitch has been Miss Havisham, who has mistakenly raised her to have no empathy or feelings, thereby, in her eyes, enabling Estella to wreak her (Miss H's) vengeance upon the male sex, but in reality, deprives Estella permanently of any lasting love because she simply cannot comprehend it.  A lifetime cannot be changed.   Estella is the only main character to not learn and gain self-awareness, as do Pip and Miss Havisham; the latter tragically dying shortly afterwards.  It is clear Estella will end up reclusive and alone, just like Miss Havisham.  Only she has no one to blame but herself.

Pip, on the other hand, learns so much, about entitlement and how money does not necessarily get one anywhere.  He learns empathy to those less fortunate, as he cares for Magwitch at the end, and repents of his condescension to Biddy and Joe.  And, in a way, to his sister.  Pip moves on from Estella to work with Herbert in India.  He has moved on, and by far has become a better person for his experiences; while he and Estella may cross paths again in life, they will never be united as a married couple, now that Pip fully understands Estella's incapabilities.  And it is these that make her not a bitch but a tragic figure.

Pip and Estella made me think of a literary couple of a later time of publication--Scarlett and Rhett.  Readers always want, in "GWTW," to see them get back together.  All through the story, Scarlett, in her obsession to survive, abandons empathy and self-awareness.  She begins to learn them at the end, but she is too late; Rhett has been burned enough times, and is determined to move on, as he should.  Scarlett, like Estella, will live alone, see that Beau, Melanie's son gets what he wants, and may, as Vivien Leigh herself said become "a much better woman."  But I agree with those who said she will never get Rhett back.  Even Vivien Leigh herself said that, and she should know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While there is more to Scarlett than Estella both are tragic figures who end up alone.  There may still be hope for Scarlett, but there never will be for Estella.

Both Dickens and Margaret Mitchell (with a little help from Thackeray) said it right the first time.  Let these authors have the last word on their characters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This Is NO Day To Go Into Manhattan, Darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would you believe, girls, that NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated there had been terrorist threats regarding bridge crossings between Manhattan and Queens?

I don't need to be reminded of 9/11, I was there; I saw!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And to think next year will mark 25 years!  You know that memorial will be a big deal!  And the nutjobs will be out in all shapes, sizes, and ages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take a moment, girls, to pray for all those who died that day, the loss it brought to their families and continues to, even as this day honors them.

May this never happen again, in our lifetimes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                  Never forget, girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Salem Academy For Girls Is NOT Miss Porter's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That might be true, but it is hilarious, as Baby Gojira and I yesterday watched his Cheesy Movie pick--the original, 1973 "Satan's School For Girls!!!!!!!!!!!"

What a cast!  A butch looking Pamela Franklin, (to think, she played Dora in Delbert Mann's 1970 "David Copperfield redo!) a Kate Jackson, looking far too mature to be a private school student, Jamie Smith Jackson--what ever happened to her?--Cheryl Ladd, Lloyd Bochner, Roy Thinnes, and Jo Van Fleet, as the head mistress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, hons you just have to see the scene where Jo Van Fleet gets hysterical and continues throughout the rest of the film.  I bet Roman Polanski saw her in this, and decided to cast her in his 1976 film, "The Tenant," which, I think, was her final film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The film clearly showed Kate Jackson was no actress.  Which is why she is now sitting on a chaise lounge somewhere in Southern California, toasting drink after drink to her failed career.  Cheryl Ladd at least had some spark, while Jamie Smith Jackson had the most potential, but she was too much of a type.  Lloyd Bochner and Roy Thinnes both overact in their roles, which is why this film is altogether cheesy.  Baby Gojira made an excellent choice.

To think this film was remade in 2000, with a cast of nobodies.  I have no interest in seeing that!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I made Baby promise his next choice will be something from the black-and-white past.  We have not been there in a while.

The only thing this film lacked was Morgan Fairchild!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girls, Join Us Tonight At 8PM, As "Svengoolie" Starts Off September, With "The Creature Walks Among Us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

When I first saw this poster, as a child, I thought it one of the best, and that the movie would promise thrills; among them The Creature (or The Gil-Man, as the film continues to call him) being larger than the bridge, and tossing victims right and left.

Now, I have never seen the film, but I have read about it, and it does not deliver on its promises.  What it deals with involves a group of scientists capturing The Creature, and trying to make him over into a human, so he can walk among society.  Get it???????????

Well, I have seen photos, and it just does not work.  You can put him in a dress suit but with that fish face--no offense! --The Creature is just not going to make it in society.  I mean, not even at ANNA's Met Gala.

Though he was the only Universal monster, apart from Frankenstein, to get his own movie trilogy, I always feel sorry for The Creature.  If he had just been left alone, maybe just a wave or two when sighted, things would have been fine.  Like the saying goes, you cannot get a silk purse out of a sow's ear.  Leave the poor Creature alone.

I look forward to seeing the final film in the trilogy tonight.  And I also look forward to seeing my favorite character, Nostalgiaferatu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Join us tonight at 8, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Baby Gojira and Little Pippin cannot wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girls, How Many Of Us Would LOVE To Look Like This????????????????

Dolls, I am telling you, this is the best photo of Carly Simon, ever!  How I would love to look like that.  Hell, I never even had the chance, even when I was the age Carly was when this was shot.

Every so often I get on a Carly Simon kick, and I am on one now.  Maybe it is because I am having an MRI tomorrow.  At 10:50 AM, and in Manhattan.  I'd rather listen to and imagine myself as Carly looking like this, than any MRI.

I will go.  It is the right thing to do, and I am proactive about myself.

But wouldn't it be more fun, looking like Carly with that hair, dress, and smile?

                               Keep on imagining, girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carly's 1974 classic, "Haven't Got Time For The Pain" is featured here, for you to enjoy.

Oh, girls, "All those crazy nights, when we cried ourselves to sleep!!!!!!!!!!!"

Can Chloe Replace ANNA??????????????????

To think that Chloe Malle got the job over me??????????   I simply cannot believe it.

Sure, she is the daughter of Candice Bergen and Louis Malle.  But she certainly did not inherit her mother's looks.   And does she have ANNA's class, authority??????????  Absolutely not!

And guess what, darlings?  My sources tell me Chloe is just the Editorial Content Editor for the American "VOGUE."  ANNA is still Editor-In-Chief.  And her office is right down the hall from Chloe's.  So, you can bet whatever Chloe wants to print has to be reported to ANNA first!!!!!!!!!!!  As it should be.

Chloe can never outshine ANNA, and I think that is exactly why she was chosen.  She has name value and cannot upstage ANNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aside from myself, can you imagine if my other choice--Rihanna--had been chosen????????????

ANNA likes Rihanna at The MET Gala, not in the "VOGUE" offices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Labor Day, Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly, this is the day when the magic ends.  Those 80 plus days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are always the fastest part of any year.

As I said in my last post, expect some hot weather in September.  And we still have to experience Indian Summer.  So, the sun is not through with us, yet.

I have not heard anything about what's coming in, via shows or movies, but as soon as I hear, I will let you know.

Ah, Labor Day.  To think we are in the ninth month of the year.

Make the most if it, darlings. Because after today, it is all memories.

Welcome, September, Darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Despite it being one of, if not the most hated months, because of going back to school, September has a lot happening in it.  There is the memory of September 11th, coming up on its 24th year!  There is September 12th, which is "Frank Mills "Day, and you know what I do then.

But it is the first of the "ber" months, so the year is winding down.

                                 Nevertheless---

There are the songs "September Song," and "September Morn."  And don't forget "See You In September."

And "Svengoolie" has an impressive lineup this month, including an A-lister we never thought he would show.  Sorry, darlings, I can't tell you now, but you are all welcome to take a guess!

September 13th, we are going to a 60th anniversary screening of "The Sound Of Music," and this coming Sunday to a performance by The Heights Players of "Pippin."  Little Pippin, Baby Gojira's companion, especially wants to see this.

So maybe September is not such a hateful month, after all.

But I guarantee--since we had a relatively cool August, we are going to have a---

                                        "HOT SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
