Growing up reading horror magazines, I was given the impression that "The Vampire Bat" was widely regarded as something of a classic, along the lines of the highly superior "The Mystery Of The Wax Museum," which was remade as "House Of Wax," with Vincent Price, twenty years later.
It turned out to be cheesier than I thought and was a perfect choice on Baby's part.
The story makes no sense. Explaining why reveals spoilers, so if you don't wish to know now, stop reading here.
A German village, not unlike the one in "Frankenstein," is plagued by a series of what seem to be vampire attacks. People are found dead, drained of blood, with two pin pricks, of a sort, on their necks.
The minute I saw Lionel Atwill's name in the cast, I knew he had something to do with what is going on. He plays a mad scientist who is somehow extracting blood from the victims to discover the secret of life. What would seem to be a gigantic bat turns out to be his lab assistant, Emil, going around in Dracula garb, scaling walls and ledges, to get the blood. What is never explained is how the blood is obtained. It's not like he can suck it out and then drain it for Atwill. So, there are a few plot holes.
But it has a great performance by Dwight Frye, given the most screen time I have ever seen him given in a film. He plays a sort of village idiot named Herman, who has an affection for bats--a la Reinfeld!!!!--and it is heartbreaking when the villagers turn on him, forcing him to commit suicide by throwing himself off a ledge, in a cave they have backed him into.
One unusual thing--when the mob, with flaming torches, are seeking Herman, the flames are colorized, while the rest of the film is not. Eerie, yes, but why?
Nevertheless, it was cheesy enough for Baby.
Next week, I will try and talk him into "Killer Bees," with Gloria Swanson, if it is available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Baby just loves being entertained!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dwight was the best part!!!
Victoria, Without doubt. He was vastly underrated as an actor. And he died so young, at 44. I think he had cardiac issues.
