Poster artists of that time always had to have the monster clutching a helpless, barefoot beauty in its hands or jaws. We don't get that here, but there is Mara Corday and her 1950's bosoms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Tarantula" was a big hit for Universal, and one of the best of the Fifties giant monster movies. Yet, though this was Universal, I have to say the tarantula in this film is one obviously photographed under glass and doesn't give the performance it should. Compare this to 1958's "Earth Vs. The Spider," which is from the lower tiered AIP, where the spider is much more realistic and terrifying. And on a lower budget, to boot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But "Tarantula" tonight will be refreshing. It is at the regular time and fits the fabric of the "Svengoolie" show better. Though it was a special treat to see "The Bad Seed" last week, it somehow did not fit in with the "Svengoolie" concept. Though how we just LOVED Nancy Kelly's hysterics, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, join us all, including Baby, for "Tarantula!"
Wait till you see Leo G. Carroll's acromegalic face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
