Unfortunately, Miss Ottiano had been dead for sixteen years--dying in 1942--before this movie was made. AIP was going for substance again, in casting John Hoyt as a grief stricken dollmaker so lonely after his wife's death, he concocts a way to shrink people, so he can have "permanent" company. Except the shrunken bods want no part of it, and as the film goes on, one loses sympathy for Hoyt's character, unlike with Robert H. Harris in "How To Make A Monster."
There are star turns by John Agar, and by June Kenney, looking mature here, but having played teenaged Carol in 1958's "Earth vs. The Spider." She was better in that, as it was a much better film. The real standout in this pic is the enlarged dog, who even when menacing the puppet people, comes off as cute. I would be less afraid of it, at that size, than a regular sized pit bull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For first timers, it is intriguing, though one may find it slow moving. Those of us having seen it, can revel in the aforementioned, and hope and pray "Sventoonie" is on to deconstruct another classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I have heard "Svengoolie" has two special favorites of mine for July!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! More on those, later.
See you at 8PM tomorrow, darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
