Today begins TONY Week, girls, and the Theater Community is most excited, I assure you if you go to a Broadway, TONY nominated show this week, you will see the most "up" performances ever, because everyone is at their best during TONY Week.
But what about the hit revival of "Merrily We Roll Along?" How to best represent that on the show. I have some ideas. Here they are--
"Our Time--" For those of us old enough to have seen the original 'Merrily,' or to recall the starting out of our youth, this is the song that breaks the heart and hits one in the solar plexus. The three leads are incredibly moving, and in some ways, this is the heart of the show. Audiences will go wild, and tear up at this song, so I think it should be showcased. "Opening Doors--" Now, this song is tricky. Sure, it seems joyous and youthful, but those who know the show realize where these characters are now, and where they will end up, and that is kind of dark and depressing. The number's optimism works against its sadness, making it more heartbreaking, aided by the extraordinary cast. "Old Friends--" This is what I think will be showcased on the TONY Awards. It is the most seemingly upbeat song of the score, it superbly showcases the three leads, all of whom should win, and that includes Lindsay Mendez, darlings, and it will be easiest for the audience to digest. I would still prefer "Our Time," but I think this will be the one. May 'Merrily' win everything it is up for. It is now this show's time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
