It is Labor Day weekend, darlings, which comes all too fast, and signals the unofficial end of Summer. How I long for the days when, on this Saturday night, ABC would show 1955's "Picnic" on the late movie. I mean, look at Kim Novak!!!!!!!!!!!!! That dress! Wouldn't we all want to have it, darlings, and wouldn't we all want to look as lovely as Kim in it????????
This movie was such a delight, with everyone doing standout work, especially a then young Susan Strasberg. Poor thing: what promise, and such a tragic life!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, whether you have your own picnic, or just get dolled up and dance to "Moonglow," like Kim, have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.
Sixty years ago, a musical version of this play and film was tried out on the road but did not make it to Broadway. It was titled "Hot September," and I mention it not just for historicity's sake, but because, having had such a cool August, I think we will have a hot September.
Happy Labor Day, girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is The McGuire Sisters' classic rendition of the song. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
