Now, don't get in a snit, girls, because it isn't like anyone could improve on Vivien Leigh! Not that her performance has stopped others from trying.
I always thought, good as she was, Rue McClanahan was an underrated actress. I would have loved to have seen her take on Blanche DuBois. What fascinates me is Blanche Deveraux was from Georgia, while Blanche DuBois was from Louisianne, so the Southern speech patterns would have to be different.
I would love to have seen how Rue would adopt a different Southern accent from Blanche Deveraux. It is unfortunate she would never have a chance, because I think she would have been magnetic.
Blanche DuBois is the acting dream of most actresses, and some Theater Queens, too! I know, I am waiting for my chance! I wish Rue and some others had had their chance.
Meanwhile, darlings, whom would you like to see play Blanche DuBois?
My choice, bar none, is Lily Rabe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also agree Rue was underrated.
I never really watched the Golden Girls however I loved her as Vivian Harmon on Maude!!!
Victoria, I once saw Rue onstage as The Countess in "The Women." She was marvelous.
