One For The Theater History Books, Darlings!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Girls, didn't I tell you this day was multiply important??????? Well, on this day, in 1957, that is, 55 years ago tonight, "The Music Man" opened in New York at Broadway's Majestic Theatre. With time having passed by so much, I have to wonder how many of its Original Cast is still alive. I can only think of two--Barbara Cook, now 85, who originated the role of Marian The Librarian, and for whom this role was her career breakthrough, winning her a TONY Award and certifiable stardom on Broadway, which eventually morphed into the concert career she still enjoys. And little Eddie Hodges (the original Winthrop Paroo, who was played by Ronnie Howard in the movie!!!!!!!!!!!), who now would be in his mid-Sixties!!!!!!!!!
This show went on to be a classic of the stage, regional theater, and became an exceptionally well done film (one of the best adaptations of a Broadway show), with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones, in 1962!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, if this is in your music collection tonight, pull it out and give it a listen! Treasure "Seventy-Six Trombones," not to mention such favorites as "Goodnight, My Someone," "Trouble," "Lida Rose," and "Till There Was You." They don't write them like this anymore!!!!!!!! There is not a wasted song in the bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy 55th Birthday, to "The Music Man!" Just think what it did for Iowa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
