When I first heard, earlier this year, that ENCORES Summer Series was going to include "Runaways," I am telling you, darlings, I was SO excited. This gem has not been revived on the New York stage since its legendary 1978 Original Production. The work's creator, Elizabeth Swados, passed on this year, so this is a perfect tribute to her.
Except.
There are a really limited number of performances. Five, to be exact. It is performing from July 4 through July 9. Which means this is not only going to be the biggest Summer event, but the hottest ticket.
Then, just think what it has to live up to--that Original Cast--Josie De Guzman, Trini Alvarado, Carlo Imperato, David Schechter, Bruce Hilibok, Karen Evans, Nan-Lynn Nelson, Evan Miranda, Bernie Allison--and these are just the ones I can remember. For a time, Diane Lane was a cast member, though by the time it got to Broadway, she had been replaced by Rachel Kelly.
The makers of this "Ruanways" have cast roles with kids from all over the five boroughs. They have a great deal to live up to. Also, with their generation, and their background, do they have the wherewithal to perform this?????? The social consciousness????? "Runaways" is filled with numbers, bursting with theatrical excitement, occasionally joyous, but more a dark meditation on the Human Condition, junior division. Can the spoiled, technologized "Spring Awakening" generation understand the concept of life on the streets, child abuse, and child prostitution? These are realities dealt with in "Runaways;" what do these indulged kids know about any of this, anyway?????????/
This is one time when I would love to be proven wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
