Now, This Is Just A Rumor, But.....................

                             It is, unfortunately true the current revival of "Carousel" closes on September 16, which is a gross artistic mistake.  Renee Fleming, doing one of the best Nettie Fowlers ever seen and heard, was always contracted to take a two month hiatus from the production, starting September 2, after which she would return.  But, with the closing date announced, the  return is moot.

                              But someone needs to step in, during this time, as Nettie.  I always imagined it would be the understudy.  With just two weeks left to play the show, at that point, what harm would it do?

                               However, I have heard a rumor--just a rumor, now--that Audra McDonald may step into the role for this period.  Why she would want to do this role for only two weeks can only be attributed to her long association with "Carousel"--she won her first TONY for the 1994 production, and hosted the Philharmonic Concert one, where Jessie Mueller played Carrie Pipperidge, back in 2013.  So, I can see why she might want to do it.

                                The other thing hard to deal with is that Audra, at a stunning looking 48, would be suitable for Nettie, whom I always thought was much older.  I have no doubt she has the acting and vocal chops, but isn't she a bit young??????????????????

                                  I can tell you, if Audra does go in, those last two weeks of "Carousel" will sell out, because every Theater Queen will be scrambling to see her.  And I am sure Jessie and Company would love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                  Whether this happens remains to be seen.

                                   Meanwhile, "Carousel" still lives, and breathes!  Keep it from closing, darlings!!!!!!!!!!

                                    At least have it run for a complete year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
